Guyana: Sky People

Because almost nobody goes this deep into the interior. Because this is a genuine lost-world expedition. Because exploration still exists here, and this time there may not be a route at all.

This is a pioneering journey rather than a pre-packaged trip: travel deep into the Guyana rainforest, reach the lone forested mountain of Wokomung, and attempt what may be its first recorded summit.

High above the rainforest, on one of Guyana's tepuis in the heart of the Pakaraima Mountains, there are local rumours of undiscovered cave paintings. Nobody can promise they exist, and nobody can promise the way to them.

There is also a rumour of a Dutch explorer who died in a cave after eating bat meat. The legend has it that he was searching for gold hidden in the mountains cave networks from Spanish raiders and the legendary city of El-dorado… We will be looking out for this cave on the ascent!

The expedition will take place alongside experienced Patamona expedition guides from the indigenous communities below Wokomung. The Patamona are known as the "Sky People", and this expedition will directly benefit the village of Kopinang, which sits beneath the mountain's walls.

This overland expedition requires a very good level of physical fitness. You should expect to carry your own rucksack, potentially weighing around 23kg when fully loaded with equipment, food and water. The terrain will be remote, humid, steep and physically demanding.

Because this is exploratory and uncharted, we cannot guarantee access to the summit.
