People to share the adventure with

By Tommy

Why Atlas51 is building a community around people who want to get out there and share the experience.

A group standing together beside a river with kayaks.

We know how hard it can be to find people who want the same kind of adventure. You find a trip that looks brilliant, send it to a few friends, and discover that the calendars, interests and enthusiasm don’t quite line up.

That’s part of what we want Atlas51 to help with.

You might come with a friend. You might bring a group. You might be the only person you know who fancies it. All are welcome. You don’t need an impressive travel history or a story ready for the dinner table. Curiosity is a good place to start.

The trips give people something to do together. Something unfamiliar, sometimes difficult, and worth paying attention to.

On one adventure that might mean cooking together or carrying kit. On another, it’s getting to grips with a three-wheeler, comparing the day’s mistakes over supper, or laughing at something completely stupid.

Occasionally wondering whose idea the whole thing was.

Those are the moments we’re interested in, alongside the places themselves. The photograph is good. The story behind it is usually better.

In the UK, that starts with Cornwall: Big Game Fishing, an Atlas51 evening in London and informal chances to catch up at events we’re attending. A weekend can be a great adventure in its own right. It can also be a chance to meet someone who shares an idea you’ve had for somewhere further away.

Our overseas trips are there for you too. You can start with the experience that interests you; there’s no prescribed order.

We also want the conversation to continue between trips. Stories from the Field brings together operator interviews and accounts from people who have been out there. We’d like travellers to help shape what comes next.

Tell us what surprised you. What changed along the way. Who you met. What you learnt. What you’d do differently.

And, if everyone involved is happy for it to be told, what happened on day six that you’re still laughing about.

We want to make room for gatherings, conversations with the people behind the adventures, and the occasional idea that starts with someone saying, “Anyone fancy this?”

That will grow through the people who take part. An idea for a trip, a useful introduction, a photograph with a story behind it: there are plenty of ways to contribute.

You can join before you’ve travelled with Atlas51. You don’t have to know where you want to go next. We’ll send stories, new trip ideas and invitations as they take shape, and you can tell us what interests you.

We’re building this community around people who want to get out there and share the experience. We’d be glad to have you involved.
