## In short

Because the mountains are huge. Because the snow is serious. Because the crowds are somewhere else. Because proper adventure skiing still exists here.

This is a trip for people who want more than ski lifts and après-ski bars. It's for people who want wild terrain, local culture, and a winter journey that feels like it belongs well beyond the usual European ski map.

## What happens

This is Kyrgyzstan in deep winter: big mountains, empty lines, remote valleys, steaming food, cold clear air.

We'll ski Karakol resort with freeride guides, chase untouched powder by cat ski, spend a night in a traditional yurt, take a sauna boat with BBQ at sunset, hike through the Fairy Tale Canyon and meet the last of the Kyrgyzstani horseback eagle hunters before returning to Bishkek.

We start in Bishkek before transferring across the country to Karakol, our base for the first part of the trip. From there, two days skiing Karakol resort with a freeride guide. There's also time to chill off the mountains with a sauna boat and BBQ as the sun sets on the second day.

Then the adventure steps up. Three days of cat skiing, including one day in a new location for this year that hasn't been explored before. A private custom-fitted giant snowmobile takes us up to a new, pristine, untouched mountain with zero tracks, stopping for a scenic picnic lunch before afternoon powder runs.

After a night back at our local guesthouse, we head to an old Soviet mining village, Jyrgalan. The village has changed since the downfall of the USSR but is not a resort town by any means.

We spend the next two days cat skiing around Jyrgalan, where remote mountain terrain and deep snow give this trip a real frontier feel. You can see where the vast, flat Central Asian Steppe hits the huge mountains.

Afterwards we head to a traditional local yurt, eat with a local family and have a local sauna, complete with the obligatory dive into the snowdrifts.

On the way back we stop at the surreal red-rock landscapes of Fairy Tale Canyon for a short hike, and meet the steppe's last eagle trainers and horseback archers, before heading back to Bishkek for a final night.
